A picture of Chestnut soil.The Chestnut series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils on gently sloping to very steep ridges and side slopes of the Blue Ridge (MLRA 130). They formed in residuum that is affected by soil creep in the upper part, and weathered from felsic or mafic igneous or high-grade metamorphic rocks such as granite, hornblende gneiss, granodiorite, biotite gneiss, and high-grade metagraywacke.. Near the type location, mean annual air temperature is about 51 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is about 54 inches. Slopes range from 2 to 95 percent.
