A picture of Cataska soil.The Cataska series consists of shallow, excessively drained soils on mountain summits and side slopes in the Blue Ridge Mountains. They formed in residuum that is affected by soil creep in the upper part and is weathered from low-grade metasedimentary rocks such as siltstone, slate and phyllite with some bands of thinly-bedded metasandstone. Slopes range from 5 to 95 percent.
