About NRCS Mid-Atlantic Soil Survey Region

The Mid-Atlantic Major Land Resource Area Office (MO), is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. This office is one of 18 Major Land Resource Areas (MLRAs) regional offices serving the U.S. and Caribbean Area.

Our Mission

To produce soil surveys within the six Major Land Resource Areas spanning the Coastal Plain and Piedmont from Virginia in the north, to Northeast Florida in the south, and to the Appalachian Foothills and Eastern Alabama in the west.

Vision

To Produce high-quality soil surveys within the region by completing surveys in those areas not having a soil survey, by coordinating and  updating all soil surveys in the region to a common standard across state boundaries, and by exploring new ways to provide soil information to our clients.

MLRA Concept

Major Land Resource Areas (MLRAs) are geographically associated land resource units, usually encompassing several thousand acres of land with similar soils, landforms, climate, and agricultural practices. A unit can be one continuous area or several separate nearby areas. Identification of these large areas is important in statewide agricultural planning and has value in interstate, regional, and national planning.
